DWI Accidents Can Be Prevented

DWI Accidents in Austin

When it comes to drunk driving – there can be no dispute that we have made great progress in the last few decades combating drunk driving. It was not that long ago, in Texas, where having an “open container” was perfectly acceptable in a vehicle. In fact, many high-profile politicians in Texas fought rigorously to keep open containers legal in Texas.

Intoxicated driving was brought to the American stage after a mother lost her child and used her grief to mount never before realized efforts to hold drunk drivers accountable and keep the topic of drunk driving front and center in the American consciousness. While I tend to disparage the results of 3 decades of efforts – perhaps I should take a moment to applaud the changes that have taken place with regard to intoxicated driving.

  1. Hundreds of laws have been added to ‘the books’ regarding drinking and driving. Certainly there is not a person who slides behind the wheel of a car unaware that drunk driving is illegal and extremely dangerous.
  2. Thanks to the original organization founded to combat drunk driving – Mothers Against Drunk Driving – tens of thousands of Americans have joined in the effort to abate ‘the scourge’. There are now offshoots of the original group that target teens and other segments of the population – serving as constant reminders of the dangers of drinking and driving.
  3. We have ushered in the concept of ‘designated driver’ – a concept that may have saved tens of thousands of lives.
  4. We have developed another new concept – buzzed driving – to alert drivers to be conscious of their own levels of intoxication.
  5. We are actively finding ways to ‘get to the day’ when there will be no fatalities due to drunk drivers.

Most importantly through the tireless efforts of these organizations we have become much less tolerant of drunk drivers in America. Frankly, we need more resources to fight Austin DWI accidents through education and public campaigns.

Austin Car Accidents

Austin is a wonderful place to live and work. The weather, the people, the rich history, the commercial and leisurely life styles beckon Americans from across the nation to set down roots in this fair place – or simply stop by for a visit. In fact, the only drawback to the area is the seemingly high number of auto accidents. What follows is a list of the most recent collisions in the last few weeks, according to reports:

  • A portion of I-35 was closed for nearly 24 hours according to police after an 18-wheeler caught fire, leaving one person dead. The truck carrying window sills was headed northbound when it swerved for an unknown reason and struck a concrete pillar.
  • One person is dead and another in the hospital after two cars collided on Friday afternoon. The Department of Public Safety said the accident happened just before 3 p.m. According to authorities, one person died at the scene and another person was taken to University Medical Center in unknown condition.
  • Finally, although the wheels of justice may seem to turn slowly – they do indeed keep turning. Such is the case of a man accused of killing three people in a drunk driving accident last year. The man had been ‘at large’ since last summer before being apprehended. His bail was set at $300,000.
